A few Summers ago after I graduated high school I decided that I would make a special trip down to Palominas to visit my Great Uncle Lee. We grew up with Uncle Lee, the old hoot. If he could think of something to tease you about he would blurt it out before you could think of something to backfire with. At family events he always has everybody laughing so hard we would be in tears and our sides would ache.
He’s always been somebody that I thought was so cool. I guess I didn’t know how cool he was until I spent this morning with him. We went riding in his two door farm truck, checking cows and fences, the two dogs were in the back, he was telling stories and we were laughing. We ate breakfast at the little restaurant down the road where they know his name and what he orders. It was a special day. He gave loads of advice as we drove around out there in the desert but the most that I can remember is this sweet conversation:
Uncle Lee: “There’s a trick to everything, there’s a trick to life really..”
Me: “What is it?”
Uncle Lee: “Enjoy it, have as much fun as you can.”
Uncle Lee: “Well, it was good seein’ ya. Have fun and drive fast.”
